You Had One Job To Do ... Watch

One of the high points in  my life was standing in the bow of a large, coastwise oil tanker, heading across the Gulf of Mexico from Tampa to the "oil ports" of Louisiana and Texas. With nothing but stars, planets and the occasional satellite, it was a deeply moving experience.
One time, when I was supposed to be looking for unlit oil well platforms but instead looking back at the smoke billowing out of the stack, there came an incredible "whoosing" sound, the likes that would cause your heart to jump out of your mouth. Startled, I spun around and looked into the water, expecting to see the tangled steel of an abandoned oil rig. Instead, there so close I could almost touch them, were dolphins streaming the pressure wakes of the bow, darting off into the blackness, their bioluminescent trail tracking them speeding away.
I was so completely engrossed in watching the night sky that when several of them surfaced for air next to the bow, the blast of their expelled breath scared the "nightlights" out of me.
Needless to say, I paid a lot closer attention to what was ahead instead of what was behind for the rest of that midnight watch.
